A Thorn in the Flesh

2 Corinthians 12

"So to keep me from becoming conceited because of the surpassing greatness of the revelations, a thorn was given me in the flesh, a messenger of Satan to harass/torment me, to keep me from becoming conceited" (2 Cor 12:7).

Paul received amazing revelations, including when he was caught up to the third heaven (v. 2) and into paradise (v. 3). Being chosen by God for this privilege could have made him conceited. To be kept from conceit, God graced Paul with a thorn in the flesh (v. 7). The experience of this thorn taught Paul that God’s power is made perfect/complete in weakness (v. 9).

Some life lessons are: (1) it is good for us to be kept from conceit; (2) we are to welcome thorns in the flesh because they keep us from becoming conceited; and (3) our weaknesses provide God an opportunity to show his strength.

Father, during this time of transition, I feel weak. Averil’s breast cancer is a thorn in her flesh. We don’t know what will happen regarding Averil’s health. Our children feel disoriented and friendless due to our move. Our ministry job situation is uncertain. It is difficult for us to get in a rhythm during our transition. But these challenges and weaknesses, Father, are your opportunity. I ask you to display your power through our weaknesses, that you may be glorified. May we lean on you and not on ourselves during this transition time. We ask that you please heal Averil and give her life, bringing glory to yourself. Please save us from all conceit. In Jesus’ name, amen.
